Day 5 Rotorua: The Luge, Fish and Chips, and some Māori Culture

Day 5 Hamilton, Rotorua
So today we woke up and drove straight to Rotorua, which is an hour and a half away from Hamilton. When we got there we purchased our tickets and rode the gondalas up the mountain to ride the luge. The Luge is like the alpine slide but it’s a larger track so multiple of us could go at the same time. You could reach up to 50 mph hour on the carts…..which caused most of us to lose control and crash into each other. We were able to ride up and down the mountain 5 times!!!Each time was a different experience! In the end 7 people came out with battle wounds but it was all worth it!! Then a few of the girls decided to ride the zipline, which is the fastest in New Zealand. Then we got to go downtown and ate some of New Zealand’s famous fish and chips ,which were a delight. Then after that we went to a Maori cultural experience where they taught us all about ancient and modern Maori culture. They performed the Hauka and multiple songs for us. We also nominated Paka to be our chief, where he lead us to our activities. We had to perform the fight song for the whole group, which consisted of 14 nations. They then fed us a traditional feast with lamb, chicken and potatoes. Our host then took us down to see the glow worms, which we couldn’t really see but it was still a cool experience! I think this day was by far my favorite day yet!!!
